Moe Pope and Arcitype Spin STL GLD
Moe Pope and Arcitype = STL GLD
Moe Pope and Arcitype Spin STL GLD: A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Moe Pope at the Red Star in Cambridge, MA during his performance in the lead up to the Boston Music Awards. Right off the bat, I was impressed with his smooth and intelligent style that cut right to the heart of the matter. Along with the eclectic backing of Rain et al., the musicality was off the hook. His 2013 release Let The Right Ones In is a monster of a disc that should have broken large nationally, but instead, it struggled for airplay. But we all how the world of music works.
More Than Just Clever Words
With his newest release, Torch Song, it looks like Mr. Pope along with Producer Arcitype is indeed back in the game as STL GLD. Torch Song is a compelling piece of work – a literal burn down of falsehoods and the political malfeasance that plague our times. Granted, it doesn’t require much talent to make a lyrical stab at what ails our society. It does, however, take a tremendous amount to do it well and this record is far above that. From the opening track Beneath the Skin until the last, this 17 song album is well conceived and produced so vividly it sonically recreates every nuance of emotion put forth without one throw away to spare. Where many artists would force a point, Moe & company give it air and just let it float. And though I do have an issue with dropping the N word & F-bombs just for the effect the explicit language here is more poetic than harsh.
Give it A Listen
One of the things I detest about commercial Radio is how segregated it has become. Not only are we divided politically, but musically as well. The main reason I even checked out Moe Pope originally was that I heard his music and then I wanted to know more. I wasn’t even quite sure what genre it was until I saw a performance and even then I refuse to label it. And therein lies one the biggest issues independent artists have today – how to get people to listen without prejudgement of style and all the crap that comes with it.
So yes this is Rap/Hip Hop/Urban, but it is so much more. It’s Creative Freedom. It is the power & soul of Artists, and it’s good. You really should give it a listen.
