Al Jarreau – Let’s Hear it for the MAN

Al Jarreau RIP

I’m not sure if we are living in extraordinary times or if this current exit of musical giants is just par for the course, but the recent death of  Al Jarreau has put a period at the end of an era unlike few before him. Born in Milwaukee, WI in 1940 his background was as eclectic as his voice because it was sports & Psychology that from the onset caught his attention. But after college, while living in San Francisco, his music began to take center stage in his life. His breakthrough came in 1975, and he was unstoppable until death.

If you never had a chance to see him perform you missed something intimately special and precious as even this punk rock infused teen found herself putting down Creem and turning on Jarreau. And As fate would have it Al Jarreau was my first major in studio interview at my college radio station. I was nervous and stuttering, and he was such a gentleman never showing any sort impatience or star driven attitude. Definitely a rarity when you think of the depth of his talent and artistry.

R.I.P. Al Jarreau you will be missed and fondly remembered. My sincere condolences to his family & loved ones. Instead of flowers, please send donations to the Wisconsin Foundation For School Music.
